Here are some knowledges for watching Cantonese opera. By the way, Cantonese opera is registered as UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009.

Roles

There are various characters depending on the program. They can be roughly divided into four roles.

Sang(生)
Male roles. There are subdivided that youngs are Siu Sang(小生), elders are Lou Sang(老生), soldiers are Mou Sang(武生), and so on.
Daan(旦)
Female roles. There are subdivided that youngs are Faa Daan(花旦), elders are Lou Daan(老旦), soldiers are Mou Daan(武旦), and so on.
Zing(浄)
Male who has painted faces. The pattern of paint depends on the character of the role.
Cau(丑)
Clown who painted white circle on the face. There are subdivided that males are Naan Cau(男丑), females are Neoi Cau(女丑), soldiers are Mou Cau(武丑), and so on.

小道具など

小道具や仕草など、その意味するところを知っていると話の筋がわかりやすくなります。

翎子
武将が頭に付ける雉の尾で、その役の技や感情などの表現に使用される。
中国の神様にも見られる表現で、背負った旗は兵士をあらわす。武生や武旦が旗を背負っていたら、軍隊を率いた武将ということ。
手動作
音楽に合わせた手指の動作。女優は掌で蓮の花のような優雅な形を作り出す。
長髪
通常鎧兜を身にまとった武将が長い髪を束ねて垂らしていたら、敗北や負傷を意味する。歌舞伎でいう紫の鉢巻みたいなもの?
